Liederstube & PianoForte present

Chicago 2015

Schubertiade Chicago is a unique classical music event, bringing together fine music, fine musicians, and enthusiastic audience members in a relaxed, convivial, joyful celebration of the music of Franz Schubert.

The Schubertiade began as a European tradition to celebrate the works of the great Franz Schubert. In Schubert's day, most of his smaller works were performed in intimate settings amongst friends, colleagues, food, and wine, often in private homes.

Schubertiade Chicago is an annual event in this spirit launched by Thomas Zoells and the Pianofore Foundation in 2005.  The first Schubertiade Chicago was a two-day Schubert feast in the Fine Arts Building, in 825, then the Pianoforte Studios.  Over the subsequent years the Schubertiade evolved and grew in popularity, becoming one of the most anticipated classical music events during the dark winter months.  It became a one-day event but expanded to include several venues including the Dixon Stein studio 801, and Curtiss Hall.

Schubertiade 2014 was the first in the new Pianoforte Studios in the South Loop.  For Schubertiade 2015 Pianoforte has joined forces with the Liederstube to bring the Schubertiade back to the Fine Arts Building.  The Liederstube was founded by regular Schubertiade pianist Eugenia Cheng in 2013 as an "oasis for art song in the Fine Arts Building".  The Liederstube holds Lieder jamming sessions every month, in which we sing Lieder and art song as the inspiration hits us, in a relaxed and sociable atmosphere.  We have been known to keep going until the early hours of the morning.

In true Liederstube fashion we will finish with free-form Schubert jamming, so bring your favourite people and your favourite Schubert songs to perform or just come along and relax with some good music, good wine, and great people.

Children and babies are particularly welcome!

Schubert's friend Leopold Kupelwieser claimed to hold Schubertiades on his own, writing, "I treat myself to a Schubertiade now and again".

So do we!
